~Message in a bottle for mums Feb 10 2004~
Researchers at Coventry University are calling for more education about breastfeeding after finding that young mums know the breast is best message but still bottle feed.
The study, funded by the Department of Health, aimed to find out the reasons for low rates of breastfeeding among young women in low-income groups.
Health professionals worked with white and south Asian mothers.
They believed Pakistani mothers were enthusiastic about breastfeeding but had poor knowledge of weaning.
White mothers knew breast was best but this knowledge often didn't transform into practice because it was over-ridden by negative experiences.
Some of the perceptions that discouraged breastfeeding was an expectation it would be painful, the desire to have bonny babies - associated with breastfeeding.
Recommendations include the need to educate health professionals so they can understand the cultural traditions among mums.

~Featured site of the month~
CoodlesBaby.com

Learning to sew while in school, Megan, the owner and creator of CoodlesBaby.com decided that creating cloth diapers and slings would be a good way of making some extra money. She spent a year sewing diapers, before she started making slings, and she has dedicated an entire room of her home to her craft.
Megan's, cloth diapers are very unique and truly works of art. The diapers are beautiful and made with love. CoodlesBaby does not stop at diapers. She carries Slings, bath sets, Mama pads, hats, bibs, and more!
Megan, says that her hemp prefolds are her favorite items in the store, and the bath sets make excellent gifts! As a promotion for this site we are being offered free shipping for the months of March and when we buy any six items, we get the 7'th free.
Be sure to mention that you are from Got-Breastmilk.org when you order.

1. What is your earliest memory of breastfeeding?
My earliest memory of breastfeeding was 10 minutes after giving birth. I was so lost and I had a little one in my arms that was more lost than I was. I tried to get help from the nurse, but she just said I was doing fine. Well, it turned out Shannon was not even on my nipple all the way. She was sucking on the side of it. Ouch! I probably would've given up on breastfeeding all together if it weren't for the internet to connect me to support for all of our breastfeeding trials and errors.

2. Where did you grow up?
I grew up in south St. Louis city.

3. How do family and friends react to your nursing?
My Mom is the only one supportive of it. She doesn't really know anything about it, but she thinks its wonderful and encourages it. She's still against breastfeeding in public, but I take what I can get. My husband is a support group in himself though. I am very lucky.

4. What is your dream job?
My dream job would be to work in a rehabilitation center for aquatic animals. We went to one in Sarasota, FL called Shedd's Aquarium. There was a Sea Turtle that had been injured by a steel rod through his head. They were able to rehabilitate him so that he could live a happy life. It was inspiring!

5. Do you have problems nursing in public or in front of people?
I am happy to say that after almost six months, I nursed in public at the zoo on Valentine's Day. My husband was so proud. Shannon isn't exactly discreet, so I literally have to bare it all when she nurses!

6. What is your favorite thing about being a mom?
The way she looks at me as if I am her entire world. It's wonderful.
