Welcome to the July issue of the GBM newsletter!
I'm not sure about our American member's, but the summer here in Canada has not been very nice at all. It's rainy, cool, dark. I just want some heat so that we can go swimming! :)

Nursing Other People's Babies
I wrote a "scholarly journal article" about women in Mali who nurse other people's babies, titled "More Than Nutrition." It's about how women in Mali nurse children other than their own if those children are already "out of bounds" for their own children to marry, because they are too closely related by kinship. So women nurse their co-wives children (men can have more than one wife), their husband's brothers' children, and their grandchildren through daughters. This can be very convenient. One wife can go to the river to wash clothes and leave her child with her co-wife, knowing the co-wife will nurse the baby when she is hungry. Or she can leave the baby with her mother, knowing her mother will nurse the baby for her. On the other hand, a woman would never nurse her unrelated friend's baby, because they hope their children will grow up to marry one another, and if she nursed her friend's child, then that child would become related to her and her children because they shared the same breast. This belief that nursing a child creates kinship is very widespread across the world and is sometimes called the "milk tie." Unrelated children who nursed from the same woman are called "milk sisters" or "milk brothers" or "milk siblings".

I will give the winner of the following contest a FREE nursing necklace made by ME! I don't have a pic to post but you can describe it as being in primary multi-colors with beads of different shape/size/color and farm animals and people. I'll pay for S & H.

The Contest Idea:
Come up with a NEW GAME thread in Entertain Your Brain.
Whoever has the most replies to their game July 16 thru August 16 wins the necklace. Posts that are not game-relevant do not count - meaning they can't just post silly smilies to get their number up.

Bruschetta

A yummy, traditional Italian appetizer. A great way to use all those tomatoes that ripen all at once in your garden!

Long loaf of crusty bread (2 ½ inches in diameter, or so)
• Extra virgin olive oil (don’t skimp—buy the best you can afford! It’s a critical ingredient)
• Fresh, ripe, tomatoes (pretty much any red tomatoes will do, but in my family we like Roma)
• 1 to 2 bunches of fresh basil leaves • Several (3-4) garlic cloves (to your taste)
• Salt (optional)

Wash and dry the tomatoes. Chop them into cubes. Tear up the basil and mix in with the tomatoes (if this is very watery, drain some of it off). Slice the bread an inch thick and broil one side. Take a clove of garlic and rub it on the toast (a tip is to use a fork rather than fingers). Drizzle oil over the toast. Lightly salt the toast if desired. Top the toast with the tomato and basil mixture. Bruschetta is now ready to serve.

A yummy twist on this dish is:
Bruschetta Caprese

Cut a block of mozzarella cheese into small cubes, and toss them with the basil and tomatoes. Top the toast with this mixture. (Traditional Bruschetta Caprese is made with mozzarella di buffalo , i.e. cheese made from buffalo milk—sounds crazy, but it’s actually very flavorful! Don’t worry though—just plain mozzarella works fine, too!)
