Quote of the month
“The newborn baby has only three demands. They are warmth in the arms of it’s mother, food from her breasts, and security in the knowledge of her presence. Breastfeeding satisfies all three.”
~ Dr. Grantly Dick-Read

~Breastfeeding Reduces Risk of Breast Cancer~
Researchers at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill examined data from the Carolina Breast Cancer Study and compared the rates of breast cancer in 751 mothers who had breastfed at least once and 743 mothers who had not. The study found that the risk of breast cancer was reduced by 20 percent in women age 20 to 49 years and by 30 percent in women ages 50 to 74 years who had breastfed, compared to those who had not breastfed. Authors conclude that breastfeeding is associated with a reduction in the risk of breast cancer among both younger and older women and speculate that breastfeeding may cause structural changes in the breast that offer the protective factors. The study is in the "International Journal of Epidemiology" (1999;28:396-402).

Baby Friendly Product Reviews for January!

JOHNSON'S®
BEDTIME LOTION®
I love this product! I have used it every night after my DS has bath, since he was two week sold. I use a palm full all over his body and he gets a good 10 minute massage. I don't know if it really helps his sleep, but I do know that it leaves his skin feeling silky soft, and it smells so good.

  • When used with a massage, releases soothing aromas and helps relax your baby.
  • Clinically shown to last all night long. Leaves skin feeling touchably soft and smooth.
  • Hypoallergenic, clinically proven mild formula.
  • Enriched with lavender and chamomile, ingredients shown to have calming and relaxing properties.

Cloth Diapers

I went to a La Leche League conference this past November. As my friends and I were browsing the products for sale I discovered these wonderful diapers. They are made by a work at home breastfeeding mom, and are just beautiful! The fabrics are soft and the prints are adorable! The diapers are very absorbant and fit my baby well, even with her very chunky thighs! I highly recommend sugarbums products and you won't have to empty your pockets to buy one because the prices are great too! To visit the sugar bums website click Here

~Why we love Uma..~
Millions of eyes popped when Uma Thurman darn near popped out of her daring Gaultier gown on Oscar night -- but just a select few got an eyeful when the star casually began breastfeeding her baby in the lounge of a ritzy Ritz-Carlton in Florida! Marveled a spywitness: "Guests tried not to stare, but . . !"

~Dad's who nurse~
A 38-year-old Sri Lankan man, whose wife had died three months ago, appears to have the ability to breastfeed his two infant daughters, doctors said on Wednesday.
The man, from the central town of Walapone, lost his wife during childbirth.
"My eldest daughter refused to be fed with powdered milk liquid in the feeding bottle.
"I was so moved one evening and to stop her crying I offered my breast. I then realised that I was capable of breastfeeding her," the man admitted.
Dr Kamal Jayasinghe, deputy director of a Sri Lankan government hospital, was quoted as saying it was possible for men to produce milk if the prolactine hormone became hyperactive.

~Breastfeeding humor~
Boob-Lift
– The unconscious lifting of ones breasts to check which is fuller. May be done at any time regardless of where you are or whom you’re talking to, grocery sackers and priests not withstanding.
Nursing Flip
– The action of adjusting you and your baby to make ready for nursing. This means moving your tee-shirt off you butt, doing the “boob-lift”, putting the baby in the crook of your arm and unlatching your bra, all in about 15 seconds with no attention taken away from your previous task.
Wet-Nurse Syndrome
– The unconscious urge to nurse any fussy baby you happen to be holding…You may be engaged in casual conversation while holding your neighbor’s baby, she fusses and you do the “nursing flip”, your neighbor looks at you shocked “oh my, she must be hungry” you mumble as you pass her infant back. A side-effect of this is the “breastmilk fixes everything” philosophy. Actually pumping your milk for the stray kitten you found under the rational that of course human milk is better than cow milk for a starving kitten. You may also find yourself using breastmilk for your family’s various wounds… got a sore, earache or zit? Put some breastmilk on it, that’ll fix it (least that’s what they say, can’t hurt)
Tittie Wrangling
– The acrobatics your toddler does while nursing including but not limited to flips, headstands, & taffy-pulls, all while surrounded by relatives who believe that baby should have been weaned months ago. The benefit of this exercise is that you can now nurse your kid while each of you lie on you backs, side-by-side.
Twiddling
– What happens if everyone fails to mention that your baby caressing your other breast while nursing is NOT sweet. Never, never let your baby know that you can possibly have two breasts at the same time. Always keep the unused breast covered lest you want your little nursling to use it as her favorite toy. This becomes a habit quick, heed our warning.
The Steal
– The act of removing your nipple from your already sleeping baby’s mouth so that you may roll over or sneak out of bed for some midnight internet use. Typically takes 2 or 3 tries to succeeded.
Jus’ a Sip
– When your now walking baby comes to you, lifts your shirt and grabs a drink to refuel him/her for 10 more minutes of play. This helping themselves is a show of independence for them and a show of breast for everyone else in the room.
Car Surfing
– what you are doing when you strategically hover your breast over the baby’s car seat while daddy drives down the interstate ignoring your butt in the rearview mirror.
Ecstasy Eyes
– Picture this, baby is screaming at your feet while you are talking on the phone, cooking dinner and getting a band-aid for your toddler. You finally sit and pick up the baby to nurse and she goes from screaming to rolling her eyes to the back of her head in ecstasy in only a few seconds.
Kneading
– the act of damn near maiming your breast tissue while your adorable (and sharp nailed) little one nurses. This can result in your breast looking like you’ve just nursed a baby kitten.

1. What is your earliest memory of breastfeeding?
I remember gearing up for the pain when he first latched on, though I was surprised that it really wasn’t too painful, and the pain went away within seconds. I remember being so nervous because his head was so small. It seemed as if it could fit into my 42DDD breast 2 ½ times, and I was a little worried that he wouldn’t be able to breath with so much breast around him. I felt so satisfied that it was working, my little baby boy that was 5 weeks early was breastfeeding.

2. Where did you grow up?
I grew up in Connecticut. I can't WAIT to move someplace warm. I'm very partial to New Mexico!

3. How do family and friends react to your nursing?
They were incredibly happy that I was not going to feed Marcus formula. They are very supportive and gave me a lot of positive feedback

4. What is your dream job?
This is kind of a hard question because I’m not sure what I really want to do. All I know is that I want to work for enjoyment of working, not for the money. Right now I think I’d be satisfied to get my jewelry business off the ground.

5. Do you have problems nursing in public or in front of people?
I’m still very nervous to do this. In Milford, Connecticut, (they next city over from me) a woman was arrested for indecent exposure breastfeeding her child in her car. I don’t remember what came of it, but I wouldn’t be surprised if someone called the police while I was breastfeeding and told them I was abusing my baby in the car. I know I shouldn’t be worried, but the thought is in the back of my mind.

6. What is your favorite thing about being a mom?
Well Marcus will be 11 weeks on 2 January so this mom thing is still quite new to me. But one thing I love is the fact that after a hard night with Marcus, the next morning he will look me in the eyes and give me the biggest smiles and giggles. I love knowing that I’m doing 110% for him by breastfeeding.
