Amazing Story of the month!
Woman breastfeeds abandoned baby monkey.

An Indian woman is breastfeeding a baby monkey found abandoned by its mother. She was spurred to suckle it by a combination of maternal and religious feelings. She recently gave birth after many years of trying for a baby and felt the need to save the animal because she is a devotee of the Hindu monkey god Hanuman. The monkey was found almost dead by her woodcutter husband in a forest clearing outside Chandrapur village in Tripura state. Hundreds of people have turned up to see Das feed the monkey. Local school teacher Ballabh Saha said: "We can't help feeling touched by her concern for the monkey. It's like she believes it is her own child.".

Breastfeeding humor!
Five Benefits of Mothers Milk...
A young medical student is given his final examination on human reproduction. After reading Question 1; "Give five reasons why a mother's milk is better than a cows milk for a newborn baby?"; he recalled four and quickly wrote them down in his exam book.
1. A mother's milk is more nutritious; it contains better balance of fats, carbohydrates and proteins for the newborn;
2. A mothers milk contains a mix of vitamins that more closely aligns to a human baby's needs.
3. A mothers milk contains immunological agents that will help the newborn fight bacteria, viruses and other infections.
4. Breast feeding is more nurturing and better developmentally for the child. Stumped, frustrated and running out of time, he searched his mind for a fifth reason. After pondering the question for an agonizing five minutes, he quickly scribbled a fifth response:
5. The milk is delivered in a warm and "really cute" cup.
He got an "A" on the exam.

Feature Recipe: Strata
Thank you Veloute for this months recipe
This can be assembled the day before and left in the refrigerator overnight. In the morning, take it out and preheat the oven to 375F. Bake it for 1 hour. It can bake while you're opening presents and eaten afterwards (or during!) You know it's done when browned and puffed. It should not be runny in the center.

The basic recipe is
-a 9X12 or 13 inch oiled baking pan
-a good crusty loaf of bread (old or new)
-custard of 4 eggs and 2 cups of milk
Cut bread into thin-medium slices (just not too thick). I like to leave the crust on.

Filling ideas:
-ham and swiss or gruyere
-tomato sauce, cooked spinach, kalamata olives, feta and mozzarella
-pesto, tomatoes, mozzarella, parmesan...maybe some sautéed spinach.
-tomatoes and spinach for Christmas (with sauteed garlic!)
Take the bread and put one layer on the bottom of the pan. Layer filling on top. Layer bread and another filling layer ending with bread (if it fits; depends on how you sliced your bread). Cheese is nice on top. Mix milk (actually, I like to use part cream) and eggs and salt and pepper to taste (nutmeg is nice with ham or bacon and swiss). Pour over bread and filling. If you use a tomato sauce, put that at the bottom first and then layer starting with the bread.

You can bake it at this point, but it is better if it sits so the bread soaks up the custard.

Easy, nutritious and filling. Great for Christmas day or brunches. This is also great in the summer when you have a lot of very fresh vegetables.

Baby Wearing
Wearing your baby is an excellent way to bond. What better way to see the world and learn new things than doing it right there close to the person who loves you the most, mom! I was about to mop my floor one day and I started to put my youngest son in the sling so that I could wear him, and a relative wanted to know why I was picking him up if he wasn't crying. Huh? WHY does my baby have to cry before I pick him up. Babies are a wonderful gift and they should be hugged and held a lot.

Our feature book this month is
"So That's What They're For" By Janet Tamaro!

So who thought of formula? Here is an Excerpt from "So That's What They're For" by Janet Tamaro. Formula companies have driven themselves crazy trying to manufacture a rough approximation of a substance that already exists! Do you know how they came up with the recipe for formula> Years of research? Scientific grants to come up with the perfect food for babies? A team of noble prize winners working together to concoct a formula? No. Dairy Farmers were trying to figure out what to do with a by product of milk, butter, and cheese production, the think that was left over after everything else was processed and sold. That by-product is called whey. At the same time to maximize profit, industrious men were trying to figure out how to market a food for babies to compete with homemade formula and breastmilk. These business men figured out if they mixed whey with oil and water they could feed it to babies without killing them (bad idea if your trying to establish a market for your product). So the very first ingredient after water is most formula is essentially a waste product of dairy production. Then the manufacturers added vitamins and either palm soy or coconut oil-which are among the cheapest oils available, and Voila, they created formula. These oils are the very same ones used in movie theater popcorn that people are passing up for health reasons!
