Breastfeeding May Lower Risk for Leukemia in Children
A recent study led by researchers at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis appears to support current recommendations by the American Academy of Pediatrics that encourage women to breastfeed their newborns for at the least the first year of life. Smaller studies have suggested that breastfeeding might lower a child's risk for developing childhood Hodgkin's disease and lymphoma, but this larger study is the first to identify a statistically significant connection between breastfeeding and leukemia.

Researchers conducted telephone interviews with 2,200 mothers of children between the ages of one and 17 who had been diagnosed with leukemia to obtain information about whether they had breastfed or formula fed and for how long. They then interviewed approximately the same number of mothers of similar age, race, and geographic location with healthy children, asking them the same information.

They found that babies who had been breastfed for at least one month had a 21 percent lower risk of developing leukemia than formula-fed infants; and the risk for leukemia decreased to about 30 percent in babies who were breastfeed for at least six months. According to this study, babies who were primarily breastfed for any amount of time had their risk for leukemia decreased, and that risk decreased further the longer they were breastfed during the first year.

These researchers believe additional research is needed, but this study reinforces prior research regarding the benefits of breastfeeding infants.

Milk is nature's most perfect food for a baby calf, who has four stomachs, will double its weight in 47 days, and is destined to weigh 300 pounds within a year!

~April 2004 is Cesarean Awareness month~

Not every mother can have the birth of her dreams. Got-Breastmilk.org wears this ribbon in support of our sisters who have had C- sections.

The story of the first ever C-section..and the first ever VBAC..

Julius Caesar was not the first baby born by Cesarean Section; he was born normally. But the surgery's name did come from seventh century Rome when Numa Pompilius decreed that if a pregnant woman died the child was to be saved, cut out of its mother, and that decree was incorporated into the Lex Caesare.
The first successful cesarean in which the mother and child both survived occurred in 1500. The wife of Jacob Nufer, a Swiss sow-gelder, went into labor and could not seem to deliver. In his despiration Nufer at least knew how to begin.
"Thirteen midwives (so the story goes) had tried and failed, at which point Jacob collected his tools of the trade and did the obvious.
Is it possible he had the intuition to clean them first? To wash his hands? To protect his wife from the barnyard flies? We will simply never know. All that is apparent is that at the operation's close, both mother and child were doing well. In fact, Mom Nufer did very well indeed. In time she gave birth to six more children, including twins, all of whom she delivered normally. She lived to the fine age of seventy-seven." Nancy Caldwell Sorel

Supersilks

After 3 years of selling tiedye locally and on the internet, Barb, a mama to three wonderful kids decided she wanted to concentrate on creating just silks. The Supersilks logo came from her 3 year old daughters love of silks and playing with them as 'Super Zoe'.

"I've seen them used to make forts, as princess hair, a pirates scarf, butterfly cocoon, a fairies wings, a superheros cape...and so many other things. I've watched my baby use a silk as a teether, a lovey and as the perfect peekaboo toy. I see my teen 'steal' my silks to wear in her hair to school, around her belt loops and around her neck. Ok, I'll admit it. I wear silks too! I love wearing a silk in my hair on a "bad hair day" or to accent a boring dress. Thats why I started dying long hair silk scarves for me and my mama friends. I've given my hand dyed silk scarves to women of all ages as gifts for mothers day, birthdays and the winter holidays and everyone loves them. There is something about silk that makes you feel special."

Barb, speaks of her silks with so much pride, you can tell she puts a lot of love into each one that she makes. All of her silks are all 100% habotai china silk and are soft to the touch. At a weight of 8mm they can withstand serious play but are still light and airy. All silks are hemmed on all sides and will not fray.
Supersilks products'are are all machine washable and dryer safe, and washing instructions are included with all orders.

Apple Brown Betty
6 slice White Bread, cut into cubes
1/3 cup melted butter/margarine
2 Tbsp granulated sugar
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
3-4 medium apple(s), peeled and sliced
1 Tbsp fresh lemon juice
1/8 tsp ground nutmeg
3/4 cup packed brown sugar

1. Preheat oven to 350ºF. Coat an 8-inch square baking pan with cooking spray.
2. In a large bowl, combine bread cubes, butter/margarine, granulated sugar, and cinnamon; toss to combine. Arrange 1/3 of bread cube mixture in bottom of prepared pan.
3. In a large bowl, combine apples, lemon juice, brown sugar, and nutmeg. Spoon 1/2 of the apple mixture over bread layer. Top with 1/3 more bread cubes, remaining apple mixture and then remaining bread cubes.
4. Cover with foil and bake 30 minutes. Uncover and bake until top is golden brown, about 5-10 minutes. Cut into 4 pieces and serve hot with vanilla custard sauce.
Note: I used my home canned apples and they worked just fine, so if you want to use two cans of apples from the store, that should also work. But fresh probably taste best.

Vanilla Custard Sauce

1 tsp vanilla extract
1 1/4 cup milk
1 average cinnamon stick (or ½ tsp. ground cinnamon)
3 large egg yolk(s)
1/4 cup sugar

Heat the milk, vanilla and cinnamon stick (or ground cinnamon) on medium heat. Meanwhile, whisk the egg yolks and sugar together. Add the egg yolk mixture to the milk mixture slowly, whisking the entire time. Heat the mixture SLOWLY until it just becomes hot (DO NOT BOIL) and thickens slightly. Watch it carefully or you will end up with vanilla-flavored scrambled eggs instead of custard!

Pour ¼ of the hot custard over each piece of apple brown betty and serve immediately.

1. What is your earliest memory of breastfeeding?
Actually my first memory is of using a pump. Robbie was 5 weeks early and had a high bili so he was tired wouldn't latch so I was pumping until he would wake up enough to latch on. After that he was a pro!!

2. Where did you grow up?
Tacoma, Washington

3. How do family and friends react to your nursing?
My MIL is very supportive since she BF all 3 of her kids. My mom just tolerated it and I know she doesn't approve of my extended nursing. She leaves the room when I nurse Nate.

4. What is your dream job?
Lactation education out of my home.

5. Do you have problems nursing in public or in front of people?
Not when the nursling is under a year. After that they get too squirmy and it is hard to be discreet. I have no problem if someone else does it, it is just my personal problem with someone other that DH seeing my boob.

6. What is your favorite thing about being a mom?
There are so many things. My kids are going to hate me when they are older because I want to be totally involved in everything they do. I love working in Robbie's class, I love going to the park with Nate, swimming lessons, and toddler gym are favorites too. I just love being with my kids.
