Smoking and the Flavour of Breastmilk
Want another reason to quit smoking?

Want another reason to quit smoking? A recent study published in The New England Journal of Medicine found that smoking alters the odour and therefore the flavour of breastmilk.

The study found that breastmilk samples collected from women 30 minutes to one hour after smoking smelled "stronger" or "more like cigarettes" than other samples collected after a 12-hour abstinence from smoking. According to the researchers, this early exposure to the flavour of cigarettes raises the likelihood that these children will find cigarettes more appealing later in life. They suggest that children of mothers who smoke are more likely to take up the habit in adolescence. While they do not suggest that mothers who smoke should stop nursing, they note that the knowledge that smoking does change the smell and taste of breastmilk may be an added incentive to kick the habit.

Research shows, however, that even if you smoke, the benefits of breastfeeding outweigh the risks of exposure to second-hand smoke to your baby.

If you would like some help in quitting smoking, speak to your caregiver or public health unit. Many communities now offer support programs for quitters.

"In short, breastfeeding occurs above the eyebrows as much as or more than it occurs in the mammary glands."

Paprika Fried Chicken

1 1/2 lbs boneless chicken breast
3 Tbp Flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. pepper
1 tsp. paprika
2 Tbsp. peanut oil

Combine dry ingredients in a zip lock bag. Shake chicken, one piece at a time, in ziploc bag to coat evenly. Fry the chicken in the peanut oil for 7-10 minutes, turning often, until cooked throughout. Makes 3-4 servings.

For the potatoes:
2-3 lbs redskin potatoes
1/4-1/3 cup milk (to taste)
2 Tbsp. (to taste)
1/2 tsp. salt (to taste)
1 Tbsp. parsley

Wash but do NOT peel potatoes. Cut the potatoes into sixths (larger potatoes should be cut into eighths). Bring large pot of water to boil; add salt to taste (1/2 tsp or so), then add cut up potatoes. Boil until the potatoes break apart easily when pressed against side of pot, usually 20-25 minutes. Drain. Lightly mash with a wooden spoon (we like ours a little chunky), add milk and butter starting with smaller amount, stir to desired consistency, adding more of each if needed. Then add salt to taste, then parsley, mixing well.

What is your earliest memory of breastfeeding?
3 years old, nursing at my mothers breast. I remember always playing with her long long hair while I was nursing.

Where did you grow up?
Earth....I think LOL

What is your dream job?
Executive Director with Melaleuca and Lactation consultant just for fun. I would do it for free!

How do family and friends react to your nursing?
Great! My mom nursed me until I was three so she has been very supportive and almost all my friends are nursers themselves.

Do you have problems nursing in public or in front of people?
Nope, I dont worry about covering up most times unless I sense a pervert and then I will cover up because the thought of some guy getting off on a baby nursing makes me ILL

What is your favorite thing about being a mom?
I really love getting to see my babies grow up.
